What is the Casita model ?
Resilience is not an innate skill for everyone. However, it can be developed. This is the purpose of the Casita model. The Casita model is a visual “house” that represents resilience through its multiple dimensions.
Originally, this model was just a visual aid that made it easier to explain what resilience is. Today, it is a learning tool that consists (as its name suggests) of a small house.
What is resilience ?
Resilience refers to an individual’s ability to adapt to the challenges and obstacles they encounter, to cope with adversity, stressful situations, or certain life events that are more difficult to go through. Concretely, resilience embodies the capacity to bounce back from life’s difficulties by managing stress in a positive way.
The floors of the Casita
The house in the Casita model is composed of several floors, each of which offers the person exploring it access to various personal resources. Each level focuses on a specific theme.
Soil : the basic material needs
Before embarking on any process of self-development, it is essential to meet one’s basic needs. This includes getting enough sleep, eating properly, and taking care of one’s health. Once this foundation is in place, the development of resilience can begin.
The foundation : unconditional acceptance
Self-acceptance is a prerequisite for developing resilience. It includes recognizing both one’s strengths and weaknesses. This makes it easier to respond to situations, as the individual remains true to themselves, without fear of judgment from others. They accept themselves and act as they see fit, thanks to the development of this psychological protection.
The garden : the network of contacts
Feeling connected and being surrounded by others is a fundamental element of resilience. One’s network of relationships should be both high-quality and diverse. These individuals provide support and help you feel accompanied and valued in your efforts. It is within one’s social circle that the strength and energy needed for resilience are found.
The ground floor : the meaning and coherence of life
Understanding the meaning of one’s life is essential, yet not always easy. Ideally, individuals should set clear goals and define the means to achieve them, in order to better understand where they want to go. By asking these questions, a deeper sense of purpose gradually emerges in what we do. It is also important to give meaning to mistakes. Ignoring them is not a solution; they should be acknowledged and understood in order to move forward, just like successes.
The 1st floor : self-esteem, skills, and humor
On the first floor of the “casita” are three individual skills to be entered.
- Self-esteem corresponds to the value we give ourselves and that we think we deserve. Self-esteem increases self-confidence and the ability to assert oneself within a group.
- Individual skills come in several categories, all of which encourage the development of resilience. We can quote in particular:
- Empathy, which reflects a high level of social awareness, plays a key role in interpersonal relationships. Generally, the way you behave towards others tends to be reciprocated. As a result, this fosters encouragement, provides support, and generates a strong sense of kindness and goodwill.
- Emotional regulation helps maintain one’s composure in any situation. It enables individuals to act with greater calm and efficiency, making it easier to get through challenging experiences.
- Taking a step back allows you to let go for a moment and take stock of the situation and objectify it as best as possible.
- Humor often helps people put things into perspective more easily and gain distance from the problems they encounter. By approaching a situation with humor, it helps to ease the atmosphere and reduce the associated stress. As a result, tensions decrease, allowing individuals to act with greater resilience.
The attic : other life experiences
The top floor of our Casita represents the culmination of self-development. At this stage, the individual is able to face new experiences and set new goals with a strong sense of resilience.
How to use the Casita model ?
Each level of the Casita should be confronted with concrete situations and personal experiences. It is important to ask oneself questions to determine whether each level has been fulfilled and whether one feels satisfied with what they have. Are we confident in the quality of our social network? Are our basic needs being met? Are we empathetic?
Once these questions can be answered positively, you can move on to the next level, and so on. If this is not the case, then consider how to address it and do not be afraid to take action. Remember that you are doing this to develop your resilience, which contributes to your strengths and therefore to your overall well-being.
In conclusion
Each person has their own house, their own Casita. This means that everyone progresses at their own pace in developing resilience, and that some levels may feel more difficult to reach for certain individuals than for others. There is no need to worry; everything comes in due time. Work on it and you’ll get there.
